David Stein was the founder of the company later to be known as Torrco. David arrives in New York from Lithuania and moves to Patterson, New Jersey, where he has family. David and his new wife move to New Britain, Connecticut, where his brother has a contracting business. After briefly working for his brother, David gets a job as a plumber working for F.F. Garrity Co. in Waterbury, Connecticut. David opens his own plumbing contracting business after moving to Waterbury. He purchases plumbing supplies from a supply company in nearby Meriden and stores them in his garage in Waterbury. Local plumbing contractors begin to buy supplies from him out of the garage, and the idea of a distribution center is born. 1917 to 1925 Flood_Waterbury_1924.jpg Torrco is founded as Brass City Plumbing Supply and is located along the Naugatuck River on South Main Street in Waterbury, where the Home Depot currently exists. Brass City Plumbing Supply opens its first new branch, in Torrington, Connecticut. The Waterbury location is flooded, and the company is forced to move its office and operations to the Torrington location. The Waterbury location does get reopened, but only as a branch. 1931 to 1936 The company changes its name from Brass City Plumbing Supply to Torrington Supply Company. 1940 1935_image.png The company moves its office and main location back to Waterbury, at the current location between Maple and Elm Street. By this time, the company has become a real family business, with three of David's sons working at the business part-time and full-time. During this time, the three brothers each take turns going to college while two of them work at the business with their father. With the addition of David's three sons, the business begins to flourish. 1976 to 1988 Joel Becker, Morris Stein's son-in-law joins the business. Currently serves as CEO. In 1977, Jerry Stein retires. The company builds a 72,000 square foot distribution center on the location of the 1940 site. The three sons retire during the decade, and the company goes through a generational change of ownership and management. Nancy Becker, daughter of Morris Stein, joins the Torrington Supply Company. 2000 to 2002 After having opened new branches over the last two decades, the company now has eight branches throughout Connecticut. The fourth generation of the family enters the company. 2009 Litco_Supply_Torrington.jpg Torrington Supply purchases Litco Supply and adds six branch locations and three retail showrooms in northwestern Connecticut and western Massachusetts. 2012 torrco_logo-serv_vert_pms.png The company combines its three trade names – Torrington Supply, Litco Supply and Luxury Bath Center – into the new brand name, Torrco. The name change defines who the company is, what it stands for, how it behaves and the promise it represents. The brand also makes it easier for customers to buy products and realize value in their relationship with Torrco. 2013 family_2013_image.png Torrco sells plumbing, piping, HVAC and kitchen & bath supplies to contractors, industry professionals, institutions and consumers throughout southern New England, Westchester and Duchess Counties, western Massachusetts and southern Vermont. The company has 2 distribution centers, 11 trade branch locations and 6 Torrco Design Center showrooms.
