AATOD is the premier opioid dependency treatment association in the United States. The association works with federal and state agency officials concerning opioid treatment policy throughout the United States. They also work with their partner association, the World Federation for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence, with regard to international initiatives and working with designated agencies within the United Nations. The Association also convenes conferences on an 18-month cycle. These conferences focus on evidence-based clinical practice, current research breakthroughs, and organizational developments affecting the current and future opioid treatment system. The centerpiece of the Conference is a moving tribute to those individuals who have been nominated and selected by their peers for extraordinary service in the opioid treatment community. The award is named the “Nyswander/Dole Award to honor the developers of Methadone Treatment, Dr. Marie Nyswander and Dr. Vincent Dole. The award recipients have devoted themselves to improving the lives of patients in treatment for addiction to opioids such as heroin and prescription narcotics. Mr. Lambert began his career 30 years ago as a counselor at the Connecticut Counseling Centers (CCC) and currently serves the organization as their President and Executive Director. During the course of his career he has designed and successfully implemented a number of innovative treatment programs including programs to treat heroin and other opioid addiction. He is a sought after speaker who has given numerous presentations on topics relating to innovative treatment strategies and stigma at numerous national and international conferences. Mr. Lambert has been an Adjunct Faculty Member, Department of Psychology at Albertus Magnus College since 1993 teaching various undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology. There he assisted the college in designing a graduate certificate program in addictions counseling. He has also written a number of articles and text chapters on addiction treatment and behavioral health care, which have appeared in various publications. He has also authored research which has appeared in peer reviewed journals. He has been a field reviewer for numerous grants, text books, and journal articles. Mr. Lambert established the Connecticut Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor Training Program (CT-CADAC-TP), where over 600 students have attended the program since 1995. He developed the curriculum includes 360 hours of training in treating substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders. He has served on a number of federal and state planning committees and on non-profit boards. He also developed a peer mentoring program specific for opioid treatment programs called “Bridge to Recovery.” This program was recognized by the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) as an innovative model program. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration also honored Mr. Lambert with the 2012 Science and Service Award for this program, which has also been featured in national publications.
